Guam – Naval Base Fitness CenterApra Harbor,Guam
Naval Facilities Engineering Command, (NAVFAC Pacific), located in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, contracted a design/build team to design and construct a new fitness center for the Naval Base in Guam, a U.S. territory located in the far western region of the Pacific Ocean. The design and construction of the new consolidated indoor fitness facility was collaboration between DCK Pacific – Honolulu and Guam; Rim Architects – Guam, and Counsilman-Hunsaker.
The new Charles King Fitness Center provides service members and their family’s unmatched access to any type of physical readiness training they need; from therapeutic recreation for wounded warriors to specific training regiments including combative training. The three bodies of water, designed by Counsilman-Hunsaker, include four 50-meter lanes and sixteen 25-meter lanes for fitness, training, competition, instructional and recreation activities; a 1,000 sq. ft. wading pool; and a sprayground for family fun.
The sprayground offers children and parents a colorful, interactive water wonderland for hours of play with gentle spray features and hands-on water play equipment. The wading pool provides toddlers an opportunity to become acquainted with aquatics in an age appropriate setting.
Some other features added to the fitness center include more than 18,000 sq. ft. of space for three basketball courts, a dance studio, brand new equipment for cardio and strength exercises, a six lane track with synthetic turf field and a fitness trail that traverses all around the facility.
