Morehead State University‘s new $24 million recreation center consists of 100,000 sq. ft. of floor space and includes three basketball courts, swimming pool with sun deck, walking track, two racquetball courts, two multi-purpose rooms, and a fitness center.
The new pool, located in the Academic-Athletic Complex, is a multi-purpose aquatic facility offering a variety of aquatic programs, activities, and classes that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and experience levels.
The 5,400 sq. ft. L-shaped pool consists of:
- Six competitive lap lanes
- Large vortex
- Bench seating
- Water basketball
- Water volleyball
- 1-meter diving board
- Zip line
The Board of School Directors requested the project be designed to achieve a silver rating under guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). In order to obtain LEED certification, the building was designed with high efficiency pumps, natural light sources, and recycling capabilities. The building also has a geothermal well water system that heats the pool water with very little electricity.
