Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center

Orangeburg, NY

In August 2006, ground was broken on the new Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center (RCPC), a 56-bed treatment facility designed by Urbahn Architects for the Dormitory Authority, State of New York and New York State Office of Mental Health. The $36 million, 104,000 sq. ft. facility was built on a six-acre site on the Rockland Psychiatric Center campus in Orangeburg, NY.

Contemporary treatment is offered for persons whose mental illness requires hospitalization. The focus is on treatment and stabilization, with the goal of preparing the patient for return to his or her community. RPC emphasizes medication management, family support, activities that build social, vocational and educational skills, and careful aftercare planning in accomplishing this goal.

Counsilman-Hunsaker was chosen for their aquatics expertise to design the indoor 750 sq. ft. shallow water children’s pool for therapeutic and recreational functions.

Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center achieved the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Bronze certification for energy efficient design.
