Stephens Family YMCA

Champaign, IL

Stephens Family YMCA - Champaign, ILThe new 75,000 sq. ft. Stephens Family YMCA not only houses traditional YMCA services such as a gymnasium, weight/fitness area, aquatic area, a group fitness room, and multi-purpose rooms; but also incorporates the concepts of Larkin’s Place throughout the facility.  Not really a place, it is a focused effort that places an emphasis on removing barriers to support individuals with special needs.  Larkin’s Place is ingrained throughout the entire YMCA through accessible spaces, an attitude of acceptance, and programming that brings the community together.

The aquatics center within the Stephens Family YMCA was designed by Counsilman-Hunsaker and Ratio Architects to carry the Larkin’s Place concepts through to the aquatic facility as well.  You will find this well demonstrated with a first-of-its-kind, wheelchair-accessible waterslide.  An elevator at the base of the waterslide allows accessibility for all members of the community to enjoy.  Other amenities of the aquatic center include:

2,500 sq. ft. Recreational Pool

  • Wheelchair-accessible waterslide
  • Zero entry
  • Stair entry
  • Two lap lanes
  • Floatable play features
  • Water depth up to 6’-3”

4,400 sq. ft. Lap Pool

  • 25-yard lap pool with eight lap lanes
  • Stair entry
  • Water depth ranging from 3’-6 to 9’-3”

800 sq. ft. Therapy Pool

  • Sloped entry
  • Stair entry
  • Water depths up to 5’-3”

CPO Training

Counsilman-Hunsaker provided a site-specific systems and operations training following the nationally recognized guidelines of the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) Certified Pool/Spa Operators course.  This course emphasized and concentrated on systems and procedures to be used at the Stephen’s Family YMCA.
