Now that Memorial Day has come and gone and we are well underway into the 2016 swim season, many have experienced
what it is like to be involved in the operations of opening an outdoor seasonal aquatic center. The team at Counsilman-Hunsaker has seen almost every situation whether good, bad or somewhere in between. Our integrated team of designers, engineers and operational
specialists have incomparable aquatic industry experience and are able to provide "full circle" guidance and support for the life of your aquatic facility.If you are a facility operator, we'd like to share our summer survival tips to help as you make your
way through this summer's season. While this list is merely a glimpse of the physical, operational and emotional challenges that you may encounter, perhaps at some point during this summer, our experiences may provide you some guidance!

TOP TEN SURVIVAL TIPS
- Communicating your expectations and standards with your team leads to a smooth operation. Remember this starts with you developing
a culture of high expectations.
- Be aware of current code requirements and industry trends when it comes to mechanical, filtration and chemical treatment options
as technology is rapidly changing.
- Remember that not all great lifeguards make great supervisors and don't be afraid to admit you hired the wrong person. Ultimately
you must train your supervisors well and trust them to make great decisions.
- Maintaining appropriate water chemistry balance in your pool at all times may prove to be a decisive factor in potential recreational
water illnesses. And remember that regardless of how good technology has become, there's no substitute for manual testing of your pool water on a consistent basis.
- Plan for the worst and spend 10 minutes of each day on in-service training through worst-case scenarios including water rescues,
guest service complaints, pool mechanical equipment failures and staff shortages.
- Appreciate your team members. This starts by recognizing and celebrating your people each and every day.
- Stay focused on the positive. Being a part of the operations team at a seasonal aquatic facility can be demanding as the hours
are and long and arduous. Despite what you may think, not every customer complaint is the end of the world and your equipment and systems do sometimes function as intended.
- To help you better survive for next year and plan for the future, remember to record not only the so called challenges and
incidents, but what works well and where opportunity for improvements might exist. This includes items that might not be obvious to the everyday user such as the pool mechanical, filtration, chemical systems and controls.
- Seek the advice from other professionals on an ongoing basis. This could mean building your network with others in the aquatic
community ranging from lifeguards, managers, operations specialists and design professionals.
- Have fun and make a difference in someone's life. Working in the aquatics industry provides the opportunity to create life-changing
experiences for all ages. In some cases, you may be a young person's first professional leader resulting in you becoming a reference for life!
